Bill Information[]

Senate Bill 305

Title: AN ACT relating to utilities.

Sponsor: Sen. Morgan McGarvey

Date Introduced: 3 March 2016

Final Resolution: (March 7th, 2016) The bill was received in committee, but was never brought to a vote or hearing by the Chair.

What Does It Do?[]

Overall, this bill makes amendments to a statute that is already in existence. The act that it amends is related to the duties and qualifications of state-level utilities commissioners. The language in question had made gendered references to the office of commissioner (i.e. "HIS appointment and qualification). The bill seeks to change all gendered pronouns to neutral ones, such as "the" or "they," to reflect the availability of the offices to persons without regard to sex or gender.

What Are the Politics?[]

This bill is a slightly Democratic leaning bill.

Pros[]

  • Would set the statute to reflect the reality of equal opportunity for state positions

Cons[]

  • The minor edits made by the bill make little change in effective statutes. The reality is not changed by these grammatical amendments.
